Headmaster Minds

The lives & works of T.  R.  Dawes & J.  L.  Carr
A possible exhibition at the 2 Sagar Street Gallery, Castleford.

This is an exhibition I will be trying to organize,l provisionally booked for October of this year.  Below is the text of a leaflet I distributed at the opening of the Gallery's extension.

T.  R.  Dawes Legendary headmaster of Castleford Secondary School 1906 - 1930 when he retired 'Into public life' .  He was passionate, enthusiastic, & seen as eccentric by many.  He wrote plays & organised events; including a campaign for the return to Castleford of a Roman Milestone from Leeds.

He worked with, or for, R.A.D.A.
J .  L.  Carr was a pupil of Dawes in the late 20's.  He became the headmaster of a Kettering primary school.  He was passionate, enthusiastic, & seen as eccentric by many.  Carr drew, painted, worked in silver & wood, published books, maps & poetry, & wrote novels.  He also spent years campaigning to save a church at Newton in the Willows.
A novel, called How Steeple Sinderby Wanderers Won the F.  A.  Cup, was based on South Milford.  One called A Month in the Country, was based on Newton in the Willows, won the Guardian Prize, was shortlisted for the Booker, & became a film.

Ken Branagh went to R.A.D.A., had his first big role in A Month in the Country (with Colin Firth & Natasha Richardson).  &’s a Carr fan.

Glyn Watkins is a Bradford based poet, artist & writer who used to be a teacher & writes a poem every Christmas.  He was awarded a book of Housman poems by Carr inscribed An award for gallantry for approaching a snooty bookseller!'  He found a print of A Month in the Country for the launch of his first book at the National Museum of Film, Photography & Television, & persuaded Channel 4 to release it on DVD for the first ever time.  He wants to organise an exhibition to celebrate Dawes and Carr.  If you are interest or can offer help please get in touch via www.bradwan.co.uk or leave a message at the gallery.
